Meanwhile, Carol’s leadership in journalism has inspired a new generation of reporters. Joseph Beyanga: A Radio veteran turning up the volume on road safety awareness

Joseph Beyanga, affectionately known as Joe Walker, is not just a dedicated road safety advocate; he is also a seasoned radio veteran whose 23-year career in the media industry has profoundly impacted Uganda. Having recently turned 45, Beyanga embarked on an ambitious journey, walking 340 kilometers from Kampala to Bushenyi in a campaign titled “Joe Walker and Friends – Safe Roads Save Lives.”

Beyanga's illustrious radio career began at 93.3 KFM, a subsidiary of Nation Media Group, where he served as a producer then later production manager before he finally became the Head of Radio.

His innovative approach to content development helped shape the station’s programming, influencing countless listeners across the country.

His extensive experience in media provided him with a platform to raise awareness on various societal issues, laying the groundwork for his current focus on road safety.

In September 2021, after a doctor advised him to adopt a regular walking routine to combat persistent allergies, Beyanga discovered the joy and challenges of walking in Kampala and Wakiso District. “The results after the first few days were amazing. The pain and discomfort dramatically decreased,” he reflected. He also noted the difficulties pedestrians face due to careless motorcyclists and drivers. “It’s fun to walk, but it can also be dangerous,” he emphasized, highlighting the urgent need for greater awareness among road users.

Inspired by his experiences, Beyanga launched the “Joe Walker and Friends” road safety walk to shed light on pressing issues like road safety, personal responsibility, and healthy living. “We need to work on road safety, personal responsibility on the road, and living a healthy lifestyle,” he asserted, showcasing his commitment to making a difference.

Before his transition into advocacy, Beyanga was a key figure in the “Stay in Your Lane” campaign, launched in 2018 to hold road users accountable through pictorial naming and shaming of errant individuals in both mainstream and social media. “The impact of the campaign showed that behavioral change is possible among Ugandan road users,” he noted, demonstrating the potential for transformation through consistent awareness.

After exiting the radio sector in June 2024, Beyanga dedicated his time to advocacy, but his media background remains integral to his approach. His recent walk, which took place over 11 days and garnered support from various partners, led to his recognition with the Media Impact Award 2022 at the Vine Awards. “I’m honored that the work my team has done in road safety has been acknowledged,” he expressed during the ceremony, celebrating the individuals making a difference in their communities.

Previously, Joseph Beyanga served as the Head of Radio at Nation Media Group Uganda, overseeing programming and content strategy for 933 KFM and Dembe FM, and holding the position of Secretary-General at the National Association of Broadcasters.

A devoted family man, Beyanga is a father of two daughters and a husband. He is also a born-again Christian, actively involved in the University Community Fellowship in Kikoni, where he supports leadership in various roles.

Through his advocacy, Beyanga continues to inspire others to prioritize road safety and embrace healthier lifestyles, embodying the belief that “safe roads save lives.” His journey reflects the profound impact one can have when combining passion for radio production with a commitment to social change.
