From Dreams to Skies: Monica Nabakooza's journey to empower future female Aviators
As we continue to celebrate our aviation experts this entire month of September, this week on #RystarLadies the 🌟RYSTAR WOMAN OF THE WEEK ⭐is Pilot MONICA NABAKOOZA.
Nabakooza's journey in aviation is more than just about personal achievement—it's about breaking barriers and inspiring the next generation of women pilots.
Recently certified, Monica is learning to fly multi-engine aircraft, pushing the boundaries of a male-dominated industry in Uganda, where women make up only a small percentage of pilots.
Her drive and determination have already logged her over 🕗250 flight hours, and she aspires to join Uganda's police air wing in the future.
Monica’s career story took on a special note in August this year when, during an interview with Africa News, she piloted a light aircraft with a 10-year-old aspiring aviator, Cecilliah Kayesu, as her passenger.
Cecilliah, who dreams of becoming a pilot herself, was thrilled to experience her first flight alongside Monica. The flight was more than a symbolic gesture; it was a practical demonstration of Monica’s mission to inspire young girls to conquer the skies and pursue careers in aviation. Cecilliah, like many others, will have to wait until she turns 17, the minimum age required to enroll in pilot training in Uganda.
The aviation sector is seeing a slow but steady rise in female participation, but the global figures are still stark—women make up just 9 percent of pilots worldwide.
This imbalance is gradually changing, thanks to trailblazers like Monica Nabakooza and others who continue to challenge the status quo.
Chris Sentabile, a flight instructor, noted how far the industry has come: “Long ago, it was only boys coming to flying school; ladies were not seen as confident or capable of flying airplanes. But today, with affirmative action, we’ve found many capable women pilots.”
Monica’s rise is emblematic of a broader shift happening in the aviation world. Her message is simple yet profound:
"There is nothing like this is for men and this is for women. I want to inspire you that you can do it, you can do anything. You can become an engineer; you can become a pilot like me or those many other jobs that people think are for men." Through her words and her actions, Monica is changing perceptions and opening doors for young women, proving that the sky really is the limit.
