Mastering Crisis Communication: Julian Amutuhaire’s role in African Union and United Nations Missions

#RystarLadies Julian Amutuhaire is our RYSTAR LADY OF THE WEEK she currently serves as a Public Information Officer for the African Union/United Nations Information Support Team, a role she has held for over ten years, since October 2013. 

In this capacity, Julian leads the digital team responsible for planning and generating content for the digital platforms of the African Union Mission in Somalia, African Union Transition Mission in Somalia, and the United Nations Support Mission in Somalia. Her duties include providing communication support, designing communication campaigns, monitoring campaign performance, developing website and social media content, and managing crisis communication plans.

Before her current role, Julian was a News Manager at 93.3 KFM, a Nation Media Group subsidiary housed at Monitor Publications Limited in Uganda, for eight years and four months of her media management career from June 2005 to September 2013.

She managed a 24-member news team comprising of two radio stations including Dembe FM, and also served as the Vice Chairperson of the Uganda Parliamentary Press Association (UPPA), covered the daily plenary sessions and business of the Parliament of Uganda, and oversaw the newsroom budget and social media engagement.


Julian’s educational background is extensive and diverse. She earned a Master of Arts in Journalism and Communication from Makerere University, completing her studies from August 2020 to December 2022. Prior to this, she obtained a CIM Diploma in Marketing Communications from the Chartered Institute of Marketing between 2014 and 2015. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work and Social Administration from Kyambogo University, where she studied from August 2006 to January 2009.

Julian’s professional journey highlights her expertise in public relations, crisis communication, communication strategy, and her dedication to peace and conflict resolution in international relations.
