Born in 1978, Alan Kasujja is a distinguished Ugandan journalist and radio broadcaster, currently working for BBC News. He is one of the main presenters of the Newsday program on the BBC World Service and has been with the BBC for over eleven years, where he has become a familiar voice in international journalism.
Alan Kasujja: The Ugandan Voice Shaping Global Journalism
Since January 2021, Alan has hosted the Africa Daily podcast on the BBC World Service, further solidifying his role as a key figure in African journalism. His career, largely based in London, England, has seen him engage in high-level panel discussions across five continents. In 2023, he was named one of the 100 Most Influential Africans by New African Magazine.
Alan's journey with the BBC began in October 2012 when he was appointed as a Senior Broadcast Journalist and Lead Presenter. In addition to his broadcasting work, he has served as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Gravitas since November 2011, a role he has held for nearly 13 years.
Early Life and Education
Kasujja spent his early years in Kenya, where his family had fled to escape the dictatorship of Idi Amin. At the age of 12, he returned to Uganda, where he later pursued a degree in Law at Makerere University.
Personal Life
In December 2003, Alan married Sara Shalita, the daughter of the late Anglican Bishop of Muhabura, Ernest Munyambabazi Shalita. Alan is also known to be a close friend of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Commander of the Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF), and he actively participated in Muhoozi's 48th birthday celebrations.
Career Highlights
Kasujja's media career began in the 1990s at 88.2 Sanyu FM. He has since worked across various Ugandan TV and radio platforms. Notably, he hosted the morning radio show The Big Breakfast on Kampala-based 91.3 Capital FM and presented the Ugandan version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? from March 2009 until September 2012. He also hosted The Fourth Estate, a highly influential political talk show in Uganda.
In addition to his roles in broadcasting, Alan has moderated significant events, including Uganda's first-ever televised presidential debate on January 15, 2016, alongside KTN journalist Nancy Kacungira.
Before his time at the BBC, Alan served as the CEO of Black Swan, a public relations company, and led fundraising and lobbying efforts for companies with an East African footprint. He also directed a charity organization known as The Sisi Project from February 2010 until October 2011, focusing on supporting children with disabilities.
